ACI Singapore Student Chapter AGM 2026

Reflections from the ACI Singapore Chapter Student Chapter

On 12 May 2026, the American Concrete Institute (Singapore Chapter) Student Chapter held its Annual General Meeting, where the new committee was officially confirmed. As President, I am deeply honoured to have the opportunity to serve this organisation once more, alongside a dedicated team of students who share the same passion for learning, growth, and contributing to the built environment industry.

ACI has always been more than just a student organisation. It is a platform for students to gain exposure beyond the classroom, connect with industry professionals, and develop a deeper appreciation for civil engineering, concrete technology, and the wider built environment. Being able to continue contributing to this mission is something I am truly grateful for.

Over the past term, we have had the privilege of organising several meaningful events for our student members. These included “Geomatics in Civil Engineering: A Live Demonstration with SLA”, where students were introduced to the role of geomatics and spatial data in modern infrastructure projects. We also hosted a lecture by NUS Professor Dr Darren Chian, titled “From Tremors to Truth: Earthquake Resilience in Singapore’s Built Environment”, which provided valuable insights into how Singapore approaches structural resilience despite being located away from major fault lines. In addition, our Introductory Workshop on Robotic Process Automation (RPA) exposed students to how automation can improve productivity and efficiency within engineering workflows.

The main purpose of these events has always been to pique the interest of the student community and provide opportunities for students to learn more about the industry in a practical and engaging way. As students, it is easy to view engineering only through lectures, tutorials, and examinations. Through ACI, we hope to bridge that gap by creating experiences that allow students to see how their knowledge is applied in real-world projects, technologies, and industry challenges.

Moving forward, my team and I hope to continue building on this foundation. We aim to organise events that are not only informative, but also inspiring — events that encourage students to ask questions, explore new areas of civil engineering, and better understand the evolving needs of the built environment sector.

Once again, I am grateful for the trust placed in me and the new committee. I look forward to serving the ACI Singapore Chapter Student Chapter with renewed commitment, and I am excited for what we can achieve together in the year ahead.

Chng Ian

ACI-SC (Student Chapter) President
