On 22 May 2026, Dr Alan Eddin Douba provided an overview of low carbon concrete, sustainability, and resilience specific to the concrete industry. Topics include terminology and acronyms, state of the practice, what to expect in the future, legislation and resources. Learning Objectives: – Describe the concepts of sustainability and resilience, in the context of the concrete industry. – Identify ways the concrete industry can contribute to sustainability. – Summarize the current status of the concrete industry in providing low carbon solutions. – Define the following low-carbon concrete related terms: GWP, EPD, LCA.

His sharing provided valuable insights into concrete sustainability, resilience, embodied carbon reduction, and the important role of concrete in supporting a more sustainable built environment. The topic was highly relevant and beneficial to our members and participants.

CONCRETE PANEL COMPETITION 2026

American Concrete Institute Singapore Chapter – ACI SC has been playing a proactive role in developing concrete technology through education, training, conferences, and short seminars. Its annual concrete competition also aims to facilitate the progress of the local concrete industry toward high-performance sustainable concrete technology. Each year, the competition also seeks to foster some positive engagement among the industry players and academic researchers/students.
For the Concrete Competition 2026, the theme will be Concrete Panel Challenge. Organized by the American Concrete Institute Singapore Chapter (ACI-SC), this annual competition promotes innovation, sustainability, and engineering excellence in concrete technology. The 2026 edition focuses on developing practical, real-world concrete products with measurable performance.

This year’s seminar, supported by 34 sponsors and co-organizers, drew a record-breaking 240 participants, and featured 12 distinguished keynote speakers from around the globe. The seminar’s theme, Boosting Productivity and Efficiency in Modern Construction with Advanced Materials, emphasized innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the concrete and construction industries.

The seminar was honoured to have Er. Kaliannan Thanabal, Commissioner of Building Control and Group Director (Building Resilience) at the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), as the Guest of Honour.

In his address, Er. Thanabal highlighted the pivotal role of concrete technology in advancing sustainable construction practices. He shared valuable insights on the challenges and opportunities in balancing technological advancements with climate resilience and sustainability goals including the need of low carbon concrete products for built environment.

Welcome Address – Dr Tao Nengfu, President of ACI-SC

Dr Tao Nengfu, President of ACI-SC, delivered a warm welcome address. In his opening remarks, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, including the Guest of Honour, VIPs, keynote speakers, sponsors, and delegates. Dr Tao highlighted the importance of pursuing innovative solutions to enhance productivity and efficiency in the construction industry, and he also reflected on ACI-SC’s notable achievements over the past year, including two successful study tours to China.

He concluded by thanking all attendees for their continued commitment to advancing concrete technology and for their dedication to building a more sustainable future.

Celebrations and Sharing Sessions at 40 Years Anniversary Gala Dinner

Four decades, the Chapter has advanced knowledge, innovation, and professional connections in concrete technology and structural engineering. This milestone honour’s part achievements and renews our commitment shaping the built environment in Singapore.

The Gala Dinner was held to commemorate contributions, celebrate achievements, and inspire collaboration to drive excellence and sustainability. The event saw a total attendance of 310 participants. Moving forward, the Chapter remains committed to knowledge exchange, professional growth, and global collaboration in building a resilient future.

Prize Presentation for Concrete Plaque/Souvenir Competition

The annual concrete competition seeks to facilitate the progress of the local concrete industry toward high-performance and sustainable concrete technology with an aim to create some positive vibes among the industry players, academic researchers, and students from High Learning Institutions (HLIs). The competition is open to individuals, tertiary institutes, companies, and organizations both at home and abroad.

The Concrete Plaque/Souvenir Competition 2025 Chaired by Dr Daneti Saradhi Babu and distinguished panel of experts challenged participants to develop innovative and sustainable concrete solutions. The competition attracted 34 teams, including 8 teams from China, 1 from Malaysia, 1 from India and 14 from Singapore.

After three months of rigorous evaluation by a distinguished panel of experts, the top ten teams (five teams from Open Category and five teams from Student Category) were recognized with awards:

ACI-SC Annual Seminar 2025 offered an unparalleled platform for collaboration, innovation, and networking. It served as a catalyst for new ideas and partnerships, reinforcing ACI-SC’s commitment to advancing concrete technologies in Singapore and beyond.

In his closing speech, Mr Lu Jinping, Immediate Past President of ACI-SC, commended the true spirit of collaboration and innovation displayed throughout the event. He thanked all delegates, including the VIPs, keynote speakers, moderators, sponsors, and attendees, for their invaluable contributions.

The Second “Belt and Road” International Concrete Technology Symposium

The Second “Belt and Road” International Concrete Technology Symposium was successfully completed from 18-19 November 2023 at Guang Zhou Nikko Hotel, Guang Zhou China. American Concrete Institute (Singapore Chapter) was the co-organizer for this symposium.

The theme of this conference is “Share the Development of Concrete under Belt and Road Initiative”. Specific topics include advancements in new materials, new technologies, new processes, and application technologies in the field of high-performance and ultra-high-performance concrete materials and structures, as well as major engineering cases related to the countries and regions along the Belt and Road.

The Symposium was opened by the organizing Chairman Mr Wang Jun, Deputy General Manager of China West Construction Co Ltd and the International Scientific Committee Chairman Mr Lu Jin Ping, President of American Concrete Institute (Singapore Chapter).

Prof Feng Naiqian,Professor,Tsinghua University as the Key-note speaker presented a talk on Research and Application of Harmless Treatment and Utilization of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Bottom Ash from Power Generation Plant.

A total of 33 experts, Professors presented various topics related to concrete materials and structural technology. Mr Lu Jin Ping, Dr Qian Shunzhi, Dr Geng Guaoqing, Dr Darren Chian, Mr Jiang Sha, Dr Tan Jun Yew from Singapore team presented 6 papers on the symposium.

Concrete Coaster Workshop by ACI – Singapore Chapter (Student Committee) and Singapore Polytechnic

Singapore; May 5th, 2023: The Student Committee of the American Concrete Institute – Singapore Chapter (ACI-SC) collaborated with Singapore Polytechnic to host a Concrete Coaster Workshop, to ignite interest and curiosity among tertiary education students in the field of concrete studies. Known for its strong Civil Engineering program, Singapore Polytechnic equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the built environment industry.

The hands-on workshop aimed to expose students to the fascinating world of concrete and its importance in modern construction and infrastructure development through an engaging and interactive activity.

The workshop commenced with a presentation on the importance of concrete and its basic components, highlighting its versatile nature and critical role in the construction industry. Attendees also learned about the trade-off between concrete workability and strength, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the provided water-cement ratio for their mix during the hands-on session.

After the informative introduction, students began their batching process by gathering the necessary materials, such as cement and water. Using an electronic weighing scale in the lab, participants ensured the correct quantities of each material were used for their concrete mix.

With their materials measured, the students proceeded to oil their silicone moulds and carefully mixed water into the non-shrink grout. After ensuring they have achieved a consistent mix, they poured the mixture into the moulds to create their one-of-a-kind concrete coasters.

Following a day of curing in the open, participants demoulded their creations and were able to take them home as a tangible memento of the workshop. These coasters served as a reminder of the valuable knowledge and skills gained during the event.

The Concrete Coaster Workshop proved to be a success, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for concrete studies among the participants. Both the ACI-SC Student Committee and Singapore Polytechnic are proud of their collaboration and look forward to hosting more workshops in the future to continue inspiring the next generation of civil engineers and construction professionals.
