ACI-SC Annual Seminar 2024 – Concrete Evolution: Transforming Productivity Through Innovation

This year’s seminar, supported by 34 sponsors and co-organizers, drew a record-breaking 240 participants, and featured 12 distinguished keynote speakers from around the globe. The seminar’s theme, Boosting Productivity and Efficiency in Modern Construction with Advanced Materials, emphasized innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the concrete and construction industries.

The event served as a premier platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and exchanging ideas, fostering opportunities for future collaboration among professionals, academics, students, and industry leaders dedicated to advancing concrete technology and sustainable construction practices.

The seminar was Chaired by Dr Geng Guoqing, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore, and Board Director of ACI-SC.

The seminar was honoured to have Er. Kaliannan Thanabal, Commissioner of Building Control and Group Director (Building Resilience) at the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), as the Guest of Honour.

In his address, Er. Thanabal highlighted the pivotal role of concrete technology in advancing sustainable construction practices. He shared valuable insights on the challenges and opportunities in balancing technological advancements with climate resilience and sustainability goals.

Welcome Address – Mr Lu Jinping, President of ACI(SC)

Mr Lu Jinping, President of ACI(SC), gave a warm welcome address. In his opening remarks, Mr. Lu welcomed all participants, including the Guest of Honour, VIPs, keynote speakers, sponsors, and delegates, with heartfelt gratitude. He emphasized the importance of innovative solutions to enhance productivity and efficiency in construction, highlighting ACI-SC’s significant achievements over the past year, including two study tours to China.

Mr. Lu concluded by expressing his appreciation for the attendees’ commitment to advancing concrete technology and their dedication to building a sustainable future.

Prize Presentation for Concrete Floater Competition

The annual concrete competition seeks to facilitate the progress of the local concrete industry toward high-performance and sustainable concrete technology with an aim to create some positive vibes among the industry players, academic researchers, and students from High Learning Institutions (HLIs). The competition is open to individuals, tertiary institutes, companies, and organizations both at home and abroad.

The Concrete Floater Competition 2024 challenged participants to develop innovative and sustainable concrete solutions. The competition attracted 9 teams, including 2 teams from China, 2 from Malaysia, and 5 from Singapore.

After three days of rigorous evaluation by a distinguished panel of experts, the top five teams were recognized with awards:

Bronze Award: $500
Merit Awards: $300
Commendations: $200

Concrete Competition 2024

For the Concrete Competition 2024, each team should create a Concrete Platform or Receptacle with a maximum size of 500mm (length) x 500mm (width) x 300mm (depth) using cement as the binder. Cement Binder used must be listed in SS EN 197-1. Other components of the concrete mix namely filler, aggregate, admixture and fibers can be innovative and sustainable materials.

The competition is open to individuals, tertiary institutes, companies, and organizations. Each team is allowed to submit only One entry with a Team Name and names of team members in each application. Each team member is allowed to join only one team. Registration is Free.

Judging Criteria:

The Concrete Competition 2024 will be judged by the following 2 criteria:

i. Criterion 1 – The team’s creativity in the design of the Concrete Platform/Receptacle. Participating teams may need to display their concrete platform/receptacle at the ACI SC conference for conference participants to view and vote on criterion 1 in Nov 2024.

ii. Criterion 2 – The total weight loaded onto the concrete platform/receptacle stably without any hand-supporting before the platform is completely submerged (the heavier the load carried the better)

The weightages for scoring for each of the criteria are 1st criterion (10%), 2nd criterion (90%).
